Catch up with the latest news from Mellasat Vineyards in Paarl.

We had a very successful Run the Vines and everyone taking part enjoyed the beautiful trail that the organizer planned. It was a perfect day that started cool and fresh but warmed up sufficiently so that participants could enjoy Mellasat's hospitality and great wines.

It was great having people at the farm again and seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones.

Cellar news

The harvest is going well, although the yields are lower than last year. The quality is good and, although it is another start/stop harvest, it gives the winemaking team enough time to focus on making great wines and great wine takes time…….

Our Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc have completed fermentation, the Viognier and Shiraz Rosé is slowly fermenting, and the Pinotage has been pressed and is now completing malolactic fermentation in barrel.

We harvested the Tempranillo on the 7th March, 12 days later than last year… The yields were up in comparison to last year and the flavours are intense and complex. We are fermenting these grapes in open bins, and that means that we are constantly moving the bins in and out of the cellar depending on the temperature of the fermenting juice. The reason is that we want a slow fermentation, and the malolactic bacteria is also sensitive to temperature. If it is too cold the bacteria will die and if it is too hot the same will happen. For these types of fermentation one needs muscles!

The only remaining varieties to come in is Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, and we only expect to harvest the Cabernet Sauvignon during early April.

New releases at Mellasat

During February we bottled our 2021 Seraphic, 2019 White Pinotage, 2018 Tempranillo, 2016 and 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon and our non-vintage Revelation. We are waiting for labels for some of these wines and the 2016 and 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon will rest for a while in our Cemetery of Forgotten Wines until it is ready for release.

Mellasat White Pinotage Brut MCC

We are also very excited to announce the release of our first MCC!!! Made from our White Pinotage and disgorged 2021, it is a complex and very fresh MCC - it tastes like White Pinotage with bubbles!!! Only 1000 bottles were produced, and we already had to allocate a quarter of that for a wedding!!

Pinotage & Biltong Festival, 23 and 24 April 2022

Get your purple and white outfits ready, round up some friends and don’t miss out on this year’s Pinotage and Biltong Festival at Perdeberg after a two-year absence.

The festival takes place on Saturday 23 April and Sunday 24 April from 11h00-16h00.

Mellasat Vineyards is once again taking part together with various other wineries. Different styles of Pinotage will be available for tasting and for sale ranging from the traditional red variants to Rosé’, bubblies, dessert wines and our very own White Pinotage. Each winery will have one wine paired with a Biltong flavour.

Food trucks, music, a kiddie’s play area and other stalls and eats make it a day to remember out in the Winelands.
