One of the hardest parts for us was that we didn’t see a lot of our clients in person. We are so grateful for everyone that supported Mellasat during the year, and even though we couldn’t always speak face to face, the telephone calls, emails and WhatsApp messages meant a lot.
More and more people are joining and following our social media platforms, and it became a great way of getting our messages and news across. We’ve enjoyed all the posts of people enjoying our wine and sending images - keep on posting them!
Vineyard News
Although we started pruning quite late this year the vines are healthy and, with all the rain that we had in November, we’ve had to do some preventative spraying to avoid the development of Downey Mildew amongst the leaves and flower clusters. Downey Mildew can destroy a harvest – last year we had damage with our Tempranillo vines and only had enough grapes for 1 x 300 litre barrel.
So far, the vines look healthy with no Downey Mildew in sight, which is a great relief for us. The cool night temperatures add to the health of the vines and the slow growing process. This will all lead to grapes which will have flavour complexity and depth.
Tasting room
We are happy to announce that we have released new vintages!
Tempranillo 2018
The very popular Tempranillo is available again. We released the 2018 vintage at the end of November. The 2018 was a great vintage and the wine is packed with flavours including marinated cherries, mixed spice, earthy notes that are balanced with the sweetness from the American oak. The wine was matured in mainly American oak for 30 months before we bottled in October this year. This wine is drinking beautifully now but will age easily for another 5 – 8 years. I doubt if it will last that long though!
Chardonnay 2018
Calling all Chardonnay fans! We bottled the 2018 vintage in early October, although some of you may have tasted the wine in May at our ChardoMay celebration in May. The wine is full of citrus, melon and pear flavours, with well-balanced French oak that is smooth and well integrated after 11 months in 33% new wood.
Revelation NV
At last, we have our braai wine available again! A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Tempranillo. Very smooth with black currents, creamy blue berries and spices. Good balance between acid and tannins, it is drinking beautifully now.
Shiraz Rosé 2021
The “dangerous” wine is available again! We bottled the 2021 Shiraz Rosé in early October and it is already selling like hot cakes. The wine is made from Shiraz but we added 9% Viognier and is the first of our 2021 vintage to be released. The wine is fermented dry but is extremely fruity with red berry flavours, creamy with hints of floral and spice notes. This makes it very easy drinking and a perfect summer wine. Stock up while stock lasts!
