Spring is in the air! The fruit trees are in blossom, the roses are budding, the birds are singing early in the morning, and my pair of swallows are back at Mellasat.

We haven’t had enough rain this season; however, it appears as if winter will still re-appear now and again.

For the first time in years, we had an early and devastating South-Easter that uprooted trees here at Mellasat Vineyards. It took our staff days to clear up the debris after the storm. I can’t remember last when the pass road and the N1 toll roads were closed simultaneously. The wind was so strong, our new farm puppy, Pino, went flying!

The vineyard team is busy in and around the farm; pruning the vineyards, harvesting guavas, ploughing and spraying against weeds. It is a busy time of the year and whatever work is done now, will be tasted in your wine glass in 2024!

During August we bottled our new Revelation and the 2019 Chardonnay, see below for the new release Revelation special. This red blend, consist of all 4 red varieties that we grow on the farm – Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, and Tempranillo!

September is Heritage month and, to most, Heritage Day is a day to bring out the braai and spend a wonderful day with family and friends. Heritage Day is on Saturday 24th September, if you are in the area pop in for a wine tasting and enjoy our popular Cheese and Charcuterie Platter.

Recipe of the month: Zucchini burgers

This month’s recipe for zucchini burgers is influenced by our South African heritage.

Ingredients

  • 500g minced steak
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 3 small (185g) zucchini, grated
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon grated green ginger
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 6 hamburger buns
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced, extra
  • Lettuce

Method

Combine minced steak, onion, zucchini, soy sauce, ginger and egg yolk. Shape into 6 patties. Barbecue on lightly oiled plate until done. Serve on toasted, buttered buns with tomato, extra onion and lettuce.

Makes 6 burgers.
